Required Mandatory Distributions: Updated Information

May 2020

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE CORONAVIRUS AID, RELIEF, AND ECONOMIC SECURITY ACT (CARES ACT) WHICH WAIVES REQUIRED MINIMUM DISTRIBUTIONS (RMDS) FOR RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS FOR CALENDAR YEAR 2020.

Dear Retirement Account Owner:

Thank you for maintaining your Premiere Select® retirement account1 through your broker/dealer with Fidelity Management Trust Company (FMTC) as custodian/trustee.

We would like to take this opportunity to inform you of some important information regarding your account. Generally, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires that you begin taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) in the year in which you turn age 72.

However, the CARES Act, which was signed into law on March 27, 2020, includes a waiver of RMD rules for 2020. This waiver of RMD requirements for 2020 means that you do not have to take an RMD this year. As of this writing, RMDs are waived for 2020 ONLY; it is expected you will need to take RMDs from your retirement account in 2021 and beyond.

If you have established a periodic distribution plan and are scheduled to take one or more payments in 2020, you may elect to suspend or reduce your payment(s) for this year. In order to do this, contact your investment representative. If you still want to receive your scheduled payment(s) for 2020, no action is required. Your payment(s) will occur as scheduled. If you have not established a periodic distribution plan, no action is required. If you need access to funds in your Premiere Select IRA or Retirement Plan account, contact your financial representative to discuss your specific needs and options.

If you have already taken all or part of your 2020 RMD, talk with your financial representative or tax advisor to see whether you’re eligible and may have the option to return the funds to your retirement account through a 60-day rollover contribution.

The information provided in this letter is based on information you submitted to your broker/dealer and National Financial Services LLC (NFS). NFS provides clearing and other related services for your Premiere Select IRA.

This letter is provided for informational purposes only. We encourage you to review it with your financial representative or tax advisor for assistance.

How have you been feeling about the markets?

I hope you enjoyed the holiday weekend with friends and family, even if virtually. I want to share a podcast I recently heard. I think you’ll find it informative and helpful.

In this podcast, Dr. Daniel Crosby, the chief behavioral officer at Brinker Capital, talks about the role emotions can play in investment decisions. Dr. Crosby’s research focuses on how sociology, psychology and neurology impact investment decision-making, and he is known for his New York Times best-seller Personal Benchmark: Integrating Behavioral Finance and Investment Management.

I appreciate his perspective and am happy to share this podcast with you which covers:

  • How personal and portfolio wellness come together in our lives
  • Five ways to take care of yourself in stressful times every day
  • Three concepts to help you stay focused on your financial goals

Click here to hear more. Also attached are two additional pieces from Dr. Crosby: Win the Day and Overcoming Fear.

I hope you find his comments helpful as you think through your own investments amid market uncertainty.
